In the last couple of days, Netflix announced that the fourth season of Catherine Reitman's Workin' Moms will premiere on it's platform worldwide on May 6th 2020. This is good news for those fans (like myself) who have been eagerly awaiting for the new series to drop ever since season 3's finale left us with one hell of a cliff hanger.

Creator, executive producer and lead of the show, Reitman (the daughter of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman and brother to the upcoming Ghostbuster: Afterlife filmmaker Jason Reitman) managed to create an excellent, original series, that used it's comedy to make light of those "darker" moments in our lives, whilst also managing to explore the difficulties of being a mother (and even a parent) in a delicate, potent and relatable way. It resonated deeply with many people by not shying away from the awkward, confusing and "messier" situations every parent deals with when bringing up a child. Even if you're not a parent, it delves deeply into family dynamics, including how marriages are tested and the support in place for mothers in the workplace - Reitman has hit the mark with Workin' Moms, big time. And, it was the seamless blend of comedy and drama, along with excellent performances, poignant storylines and well-sketched characters that made Workin' Moms a success right from season one. As I've mentioned here and there, considering the dark times we are in with this whole pandemic situation, Workin' Moms is the perfect mix of light-hearted entertainment and compelling drama that audiences need right now. And, maybe, with more people at home than usual (or at least with more free time), Netflix might get an increase in viewership as audiences discover the series for the first time.

It's always interesting when a show gets to a fourth season. Yes, Workin' Moms isn't anywhere near as long as The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina in episode length or Money Heist in number of episodes. However, lets hope it's quality is closer to Money Heist than the dire latest season of the popular drama based on the teenage witch. Anyway, despite what they might tell you, Workin' Moms is NOT a "Netflix Original". Yes, they have worldwide streaming rights, but the series is actually Canadian, belonging to their TV network CBC, who always premiere the latest season before Netflix releases it globally. So, season four ran in Canada from February 18th to April 7th 2020, before Netflix will release it on May 6th to the rest of the world. I don't know when it will be released on Netflix in Canada though - but as they've most likely seen it already, I'm not too worried.

Anyway, Workin' Moms is a real family-run show, with Reitman producing through her company Wolf + Rabbit Entertainment, which she runs with her husband Phillip Sternberg. He also acts as a director on some episodes (as does she), as well as playing her on-screen husband too - it does add some authenticity seeing an actual husband and wife playing dramatized versions of themselves and their relationship on-screen. But, Reitman, who struggled for years to get financial backing to make the first season, also uses her position as the series showrunner to allow more female actors, writers, directors, and indeed, other crew of that gender, to work on it. As we all know, the opportunities facing women going into film and TV are very limited, and it's a big credit to her, that she's using her power and position to give back to others who are in a position she spent a long time in herself.

Workin' Moms season four, starring Catherine Reitman, Dani Kind, Jessalyn Wanlim, Juno Rinaldi and Phillip Sternberg, debuts on Netflix across the world (excluding Canada) on May 6th. If you haven't seen the show yet, now's your chance to catch up from the beginning. I highly recommend it, even if you aren't a women, or even a parent!
